Associate Manager Public Relations
The Associate Manager Public Relations works for the Senior Manager Public Relations as the primary contact for local, national, and international media and supports aquarium special events and promotions. S/he manages frequent on-site visits by broadcast, print, and other media outlets and also the impacts of those visits on aquarium staff. This individual has general editorial responsibilities. S/he writes press releases, broadcast PSAs, some updated news content for the aquarium web site, help maintain an electronic database of media contacts, distribute press releases to media, and track media coverage. S/he cultivates and maintains ongoing positive relationships with media and shares responsibility for the smooth day-to-day operations of media relations. Quickly develops a detailed knowledge of the aquarium's exhibits, husbandry, programs, and operations, as well as of key staff responsibilities and contacts in each of those areas is essential. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and writing skills are necessary, as is the ability to multitask and work independently.


Essential Functions
Drive attendance by generating maximum, positive coverage for the aquarium in the media as directed by the strategic marketing and communications plan.
Respond to media inquiries from local, national, and international media and coordinate logistics related to on-site media visits.
Help research and refine media mailing lists to identify new media outlets and contacts and to find new promotional opportunities. Play a lead role in assuring that news releases are distributed in a timely fashion and keep the online pressroom updated.
Research and write press releases, PSAs, marketing brochures, publicity listings, Shorelines member newsletter stories, annual review, and some web site content as directed by the Senior Manager Public Relations.
Participate with the Communications team in ongoing updates of the aquarium web site.
Write and manage Communications intranet site.
Serve on the Marketing Promotions team and other internal work groups as assigned.
Other Public Relations duties as assigned.


Required Knowledge/Experience
College diploma in Liberal Arts, Communications, or Public Relations
Minimum two years experience in a Public Relations/Communication position
Strong English/moderate writing skills.
Existing contacts in regional and national media and the skill to general new ones.
Spanish-fluent preferred
Microsoft Word (strong skills)
Microsoft Excel and Access (some skills)
Good telephone skills
Work independently
Self-directed
