Teacher Programs Assistant Manager
The Teacher Programs Asst Manager will:
• Supervise all aspects of Teacher Programs including:
• On-site and outreach professional development workshops for pre-service
and in-service educators.
• On-site and outreach professional development programs for community
partner teachers.
· Long-term professional development programs for classroom teachers.
• On-going communication with program participants and program promotion.
• Participate in the development and review of instructional materials and
curriculum related to professional development programs.
• Coordinate with other department managers to implement programs for
teens, community partners, and school groups as they overlap with Teacher Programs.
• Stay current on trends, methods, and research in professional development,
formal and information conservation, and science education.
• Complete on-going department management and administrative tasks.
• Promote and support the aquarium's mission.
1.3 Essential Functions:
• Supervise all aspects of on-site and outreach Teacher Programs:
• Work with educators, experts, and staff to develop, design, and deliver on-site
and outreach professional development programs and materials that meet audience
needs, integrate the main messages of the aquarium, are developmentally appropriate
and address the various learning styles of the participants.
• Oversee program publicity and participant recruitment for new and on-going professional
development programs.
• Participate in the development and review of instructional materials and
curriculum related to professional development programs.
• Assist in the planning, coordination, development, production, and evaluation
of all aquarium education materials to be used in on-site and outreach professional
development programs, as well as materials to be disseminated in electronic and
print format.
• Work with educators, writers and reviewers to create and test classroom and field
activities for Pre K-12 grades.
• Ensure that the content and activities are appropriate and aligned with accepted
national and/or state frameworks and benchmarks.
• Collaborate with Education Programs staff and Print and Electronic Publishing
to prepare new materials, update and adapt existing materials for publication.
• Coordinate with other department managers to implement programs for teens,
community partners, and school groups as they overlap with Teacher Programs.
• Assist in the design of programs to meet the needs of teachers.
• Provide support and program delivery as needed.
• Stay current on trends, methods and research in professional development,
format, and informal conservation and science education.
• Attend and present at professional and teacher conferences
• Participate in and lead specified cross-functional teams as needed
• Complete on-going department management and administrative tasks.
• Acquire and coordinate all related program materials and supplies; schedule
staff and programs; manage logistics.
• Work with education management team to develop, track, and review the
annual department budget and capital projects.
• Track program statistics and provide updates to management and staff.
• Participate in long range strategic planning and the development of annual
goals and objectives within the division.
• Supervise and complete periodic performance appraisals for department
staff and volunteers, including Education Specialists and Instructors. Assist
in the recruitment, interviewing, and training of staff as needed.
• Promote and support the aquarium's mission both internally, to the
education and science communities and to the public.
• Provide interdepartmental support relative to teach issues, programs,
and content.
• Attend the general division, department and program meetings, facilitating
meetings as needed.
• Respond to daily questions and comments from the educational community
and public regarding program content, audience, and availability.
• Represent the department and the aquarium to the general public, visiting
dignitaries, members, and professionals in the community.
1.4 Required Knowledge/Experience
Required:
• Master's degree in education with an emphasis in formal or informal education,
curriculum, or staff development or five years experience in a related field
with significant course work.
• Extensive and diverse experience in conservation or science education.
• Broad knowledge of national and state standards, teaching methods, and professional
development strategies.
• Three years supervisory experience including staff management, recruitment, interviewing,
training, feedback, and evaluation.
• Three years experience developing, supervising, teaching, and evaluating education
programs.
• Strong leadership, management, and organizational skills.
• Excellent writing and editing skills.
• A high degree of versatility and ability to prioritize and coordinate a variety
of projects and programs and interact with diverse interest groups and support
personnel.
• Excellent classroom and public presentation skills and ability to represent institutional
image to a variety of audiences.
• Strong interpersonal skills with excellent verbal communication with individuals
and groups.
• Natural history interpretation skills in exhibit and field settings.
• Technical skills for operation of lab and field equipment (listed below) for
program audiences.
Desirable:
• Fluency in Spanish.
• Evaluation and needs assessment experience.
• Working knowledge of web technology as an educational tool.
• Marine science background with conservation focus.
