Senior Manager of Online Communications
The Online Communications Manager is responsible for developing and implementing
the aquarium’s web site, Internet and digital media strategies as an integral
part of the institution’s overall communications and marketing efforts.
S/he designs and manages a system of communications that includes the web site
and related tools, such as emails, webcams, online events, podcasting, RSS, blogs,
mobile phone content and more. The goal is to create a vibrant online aquarium
community that effectively serves the following audiences first and foremost:
first-time aquarium visitors, repeat visitors, educators and students, members
and donors, and ocean activists. The aquarium’s web site must be 1) a highly
effective marketing tool 2) a compelling and engaging means for telling its best
conservation stories through its best storytellers and 3) an advocacy vehicle
for the Center for the Future of the Oceans and other aquarium conservation and
education programs.
Essential Functions
• Create a web site experience that drives new and repeat attendance
by engaging and attracting the aquarium’s key audiences, and by making
visit planning easy, enjoyable and cost effective for guests.
• Work seamlessly with other communications and marketing functions to develop
and implement a strategic communications plan for the institution.
• Extend the “aquarium” experience” beyond the building.
• Attract and cultivate a large network of aquarium visitors and potential
visitors, members, donors, activists and word-of-mouth ambassadors.
• Supervise a web team of four.
• Coordinate all aspects of the design, production, content and maintenance
of the web site.
• Oversee management and technical aspects of web projects, including scheduling,
budgeting and workflow coordination.
• Recommend and oversee web site budget, schedules and web team workflow.
• Oversee integration of technology with content and design.
• Lead usability and technical development planning, including creating
or reviewing documentation, functional specs, workflow diagrams, user scenarios
and functional reviews.
• Working with the senior web engineer, continuously evaluate current and
emerging technologies to apply to the web site; incorporate technology innovations
promptly as necessary.
• Develop and implement an overall site evaluation strategy that incorporates
web traffic reports, site usage analyses and projections, and an ongoing evaluation
plan.
• Work with the web engineer to oversee web site architecture and infrastructure
with IS department.
• Provide tools that enable selected aquarium stakeholders to update and
manage their content as appropriate.
• Manage production and delivery of the monthly e-newsletter “Sea
Notes.”
Required Knowledge/Experience
• Demonstrated experience and expertise in creating and managing a web
site that focuses on marketing and guest service to its visitors; online fundraising
experience helpful.
• Minimum four years experience working on a web team.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Work experience in management,
writing, interaction design, education and internet technologies.
• Experience in writing for the web in areas of marketing, marine science
and/or education.
• Balance of creative, technical and management skills.
• Experience with usability and web evaluation studies and paper prototyping.
• Project leadership experience in internet development projects. Supervisory
and project management skills, including ability to train others in web-related
skills.
• Proven experience in taking a product or service from a non-web media
to a web implementation, including design direction.
• Demonstrated knowledge of web-related technologies including SQL server,
ASP and ASPX, HTML, database driven web sites, video, audio, production and design
tools and interactive media.
• Graphic design capability and demonstrated knowledge of web usability
issues.
• Understanding of interactive products with web site emphasis.
• Willingness and commitment to stay abreast of emerging Web technology,
and to learn and incorporate new skills.
• Working knowledge of both Macintosh and PC platforms.
• Ability to work within tight deadlines and on multiple tasks.
• Ability to work with aquarium staff, on inter-departmental working groups
and with outside contractors.
• Exceptional conceptual, analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
Salary: $85,000+
